What's New in Google Earth?

Follow an Ocean Expedition in Chile

Follow an Ocean Expedition in Chile
Until March 10th, you can follow a ship traveling the ocean in Google Earth (turn on Places layer, search for "Salas y Gomez Island, Chile" and look for the blue ship icon). National Geographic and Oceana scientists in collaboration with the Chilean Navy are traveling on their next Mission Blue expedition to the remote Salas y Gomez Island. Learn about how you can follow this adventure at sea.

Explore our US Presidents on a Map

Explore our U.S. Presidents on a Map
To celebrate the U.S. Presidents holiday, we created a U.S. Presidents Showcase to map the birthplaces of all 44 presidents, and provide details about their presidential terms. You can also see the states that voted during each president's election and view a 3D tour of the White House. In addition to the U.S. Presidents map, educators can use some of our other resources in their classroom to explore more aspects of history.

New Features in Building Maker

New Features in Building Maker
Building Maker is a tool for people who want to add 3D models of their communities to Google Earth. With well over 100 cities to choose from—and more on the way—our dedicated geo-modeling web app is growing quickly. Two of our favorite new features this month are biggies: Markers show what's already been modeled, making it easier to see where to focus your efforts. The Duplicate feature lets you model repetitive building forms in record time.

Explore Museums with Google Art Project

Tour Museums with Google Art Project
Explore museums around the world with the Google Art Project, a collaboration between Google and 17 acclaimed museums. Select works of art chosen by these partners are now available for you to explore through Street View in Google Maps, and the Art Project site offers an immersive experience to explore museum information, floor plans, more than 1000 high-resolution pieces, and Street View imagery. Refresh to the Google Earth Pro Data Layers

Expanded Google Earth Pro Data Layers
Since data layers were launched in Google Earth Pro, there has been a strong and steady growth in use. To make the data even more valuable to our users, we're providing greater geospatial coverage for U.S. Parcel Data, U.S. Daily Traffic Counts, and U.S. Demographic Data. Learn more about the data layers in this blog post.

News from Google Earth Outreach

News from Google Earth Outreach
We have two interesting stories this month. First, a new application called Follow Your World that allows you to be notified when specific areas receive imagery updates. Learn how this can benefit the non-profit community. Then we'll look at how ARKive continues to act as leaders in geographically organizing their data. Please read more.

New and Updated Imagery

New and Updated Imagery
This month we added new and updated imagery, including high-resolution aerial updates for the USA, Ireland, UK and Switzerland. Many countries also received high-resolution satellite updates, including Angola, Brazil, Greece, Zambia, Costa Rica, Russia, Venezuela, Thailand, Uruguay, and more. Take a look at these changes and many more in our update post here, or view this file (Earth logo) directly in Google Earth. Don't forget you can use the View > Historical Imagery option to see imagery choices through the time slider.

Where in the World?

Where in the World?
Somewhere in Google Earth is this interesting feature. Can you find it? Be sure to click the image above for a larger view of this location. When you think you've found it, post your answer here. Here are a few clues:

  • In the half of the world where summer is just around the corner.
  • This location is in a town through which the river Itz runs through.
  • "Caixa" drums are played here in great numbers each summer.
Note: Please avoid posting spoilers on the Google Earth Community. We'd like as many people as possible to enjoy the quiz.
