庭に隠された秘密の「詩」
One fascinating story by Hira sensei is about the secret "poem" hidden within the Portland Japanese Garden.
平先生の素晴らしい話の一つは庭園の中に隠された秘密の「詩」の話です。
A renown haiku poet, Shu-ou-shi Mizuhara once visited the garden.
And he wrote a haiku for the garden.
有名な俳句の先生、水原秋桜子が一度庭園を訪れました。
そして次の俳句をつくってくださった。
"When I stand here, I feel as though I am feeling the warm spring sunshine of my home country."
「ここにきて、日本の春日、照るごとし」
These words were imprinted on a stone which was "hidden" quietly in the shadows of a tree.
この言葉は石碑に書かれ、木の陰に「ひっそりと」たてられた。
"Why was it hidden?" I asked.
なぜ「ひっそり」とたてるのか？と私は聞きました。
Hira sensei explains, "It was Mizuhara sensei's wish to do so. The Japanese value the virtue of humbleness."
平先生は説明する：「それは水原先生の意思でした。日本人は「謙そん」という美徳を尊重するのです。」
