Background: According to his (at the time) psychopathic father, Duke was born for the sole purpose of helping his father exact revenge upon Yugi’s grandfather for beating him in the Devil’s Board Game. Losing the game caused his father to age 5 years in a single night. When he came of age, Duke was transferred to Domino High School where he was destined to meet Yugi Moto. His father used this as the opportunity he needed to defeat Yugi and fulfill the family’s revenge.

Duke was immediately popular with the girls of the school, much to Joey’s dislike. When challenged, Duke suggested and won a simple card game. Dark/Yami Yugi then challenges Duke to a slightly altered version of the game, and to Duke’s dismay, Yami wins twice.

Later, while Yugi and company are browsing the Black Crown Game Shop, Duke’s father slips some merchandise into Yugi’s pocket to frame him for stealing. This is yet another ploy to force Yugi to face Duke; this time in a game of Dungeon Dice Monsters. However, Yugi is not able to rely on Yami’s strength and cunning due to the fact that Duke’s father stole his Millenium puzzle away.

As Yugi manages to hold his own, Duke’s father grows disappointed with his son’s performance and smashes the puzzle. Upon Duke’s defeat, he outright tells his father that he doesn’t hate Yugi and cannot exact revenge on him. His father, angered by his words, then tells Duke that he failed and no longer has the right to live.

After his father’s secret room became engulfed by fire (due to the man attempting to force Yugi to play The Devil’s Boardgame), Duke manages to get his father to safety while Yugi re-completed the Millenium puzzle. Over time the two became great friends, and Duke followed Yugi and company through Battle City, as well as bidding the Pharoh adieu in the Ceremonial Battle.

All the while, Duke has managed to help his Father pull out of his evil funk and even inspired the man to re-build their business together. In the fire, the Black Crown game shop burned completely to the ground. Rather than start it over again, the two started a new business: The Black Crown Cafe.

Now, Duke spends a lot of his time at the cafe. His father is growing old and more and more responsibilities are falling onto his shoulders. He very much misses working in game design, but between his work and trying to make time for his friends, there simply is no time for it. The most he can sometimes manage are concepts and sketches in the many notebooks he keeps in his room.
