Here is a point to ponder over. Though short verses were available aplenty in many literary societies the creative genre called haibun was perhaps rare; it was a Japanese speciality, a gift from Matsuo Basho (1644-94). Even haiku is known world over as a Japanese genre of short verse. Poets writing haiku and related poems usually relate to the original creations adapted to their respective tongues adhering to the Japanese style and content, to the extent possible.

The vulnerable condition of women around the world is repeated in India but in more miserable ways. The position of women in the developed world is certainly better. More and more attention is drawn towards raping the innocent victims in India. So many are the records of such crimes published that one cannot repeat them as they simply pour in. More are the happenings unrecorded for unless something creates uproar in the society interfered by political voice they go unnoticed.

(An abstract)

The only drama published during Sri Aurobindo’s lifetime, in 1907, was Perseus the Deliverer. He added a chapter in it when it was reprinted in 1942 which was related to the development of the contemporary phenomenon of Hitler.
Based on Perseus-Andromeda (Greek) myth, it is a drama full of romantic imagination and action. Actions take place in Syria. In this Sri Aurobindo stands in a unique position compared to other interpreters of the myth, like Euripides, Ovid, Corneille and Kingsley. “A prejudiced critic might dismiss it all as ‘sapless pseudo-Elizabethan drama’; on the other hand, an enthusiastic critic might exclaim: ‘How Elizabethan! How entirely Shakespearean!’”- opined Dr. K.R.S Iyengar in Sri Aurobindo a biography and a history (p.113)
Written in blank verse, it is a fight between Pallas Athene, the symbol of power and grace, represented by Perseus and Andromeda and Poseidon, the king of the darkness in the ocean, represented by the subhuman sea monsters and the priest, Polydaon. Also, it is a fight between the sacerdotal interest and humanitarian values. The dramatist brings about the ruin of the prejudiced priest and triumph of the hero of the new age, Perseus. Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Visarjan’ or ‘Sacrifice’ is on the same theme. Andromeda, who is an epitome of compassion and womanhood, reminds us of the character of Nora in Henrik Ibsen’s ‘Doll’s House’. When her father thinks of her as “Tyrian Doll” she reminds him that “I am a woman now” and later declares-
“There is a thing full grown in me
That you shall only know by the result.”
Seen from different angles, “Perseus the Deliverer” is a complete drama, full of action and suspense, declaring the victory of divine light over the dark asuric force of Poseidon.
The drama highlights women’s right and speaks strongly against bigotry like animal or human sacrifice for superstitious religious belief and dogma.
