Resolution

There are two ways to find the build number of an ESX/ESXi host or a vCenter Server.
  • Connecting the vSphere Client to the vCenter Server.
  • Physically or remotely accessing the ESX/ESXi host at the console (Use iLO, Drac, or another management tool to log in directly to the console).

Determining the build number of ESX/ESXi using the vSphere Client

To determine the build number of ESX/ESXi using the vSphere Client:

  1. Using the vSphere Client log in to the vCenter Server or ESX/ESXi host.
  2. In the Hosts and Clusters view, click the ESX/ESXi host in the inventory.
  3. Above the tabs, you see a line that identifies the host. This line includes the build number of the selected ESX/ESXi host.
In 6.x and above use the http://host-name/ui or http://host-IP-address/ui .

Determining the build number of vCenter Server using the vSphere  Client
  1. Log in to the vSphere  Client.
  2. Select the vCenter Server.
  3. Click the Summary tab.
  4. The build is located under the Version Information section.

Determining the build number of ESX/ESXi at the console

To determine the build number of ESX/ESXi by using the console:

Note: This article assumes you have working knowledge of a Linux based environment. For more information, see Common Linux-based operating system operations (1022050).
  1. Log in to the ESX/ESXi host at the console as root. To connect remotely, see Enabling root SSH login on an ESX host (8375637).
  2. Type vmware -v and press Enter.
  3. Make note of the build number displayed in the output.
