Great place to have your last meal in Tokyo!
Things you should know:
I. SERVICE
The cabbage salad and serve-yourself green tea was bottomless ~ we loved this feature. The menu they provide is in both Japanese and English.
II. QUALITY
Wow. The breading was crunchy and the pork was cooked just right. One of the better Tonkatsu dishes we've had in Japan.
III. CAPACITY
Fair amount of available seating for a Friday, early evening. This airport isn't as crowded as I was expecting.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 19, 2022
12/16/22 Visit ~around 2-3pm.
One of my friends recommended that we come here, and I was a bit doubtful, but this was the BEST airport food I've ever had. I'm still somewhat in shock. We went here after we were able to do our bag drop in the afternoon. There were 4 people ahead of us, and thankfully made it in before the time we had guesstimated to make it in time for our international flight back to San Francisco.
We got to sit right where the chef was putting the breading on, and you got to see first hand how he had coated it with egg, then the crumbs, and then the frying. They thankfully had a English menu.
Table condiments were right in front, pitcher of creamy sesame salad dressing, tiny pot of Japanese spicy mustard, and pot with ladle for Tonkatsu sauce.
I ordered the assorted katsu. Man, as I'm writing this review, I'm reminiscing about the taste. The potato croquette melted in my mouth after taking a bite. The shrimp katsu was light and simple and paired with the sauce was a beautiful combination. I believe it was pork katsu that I had which was tender and worked well with the katsu. The salad was just right with the creamy sesame salad dressing. And the miso was the red miso, which is a bit more bitter than the regular miso but good. And surprisingly there were little tiny clams, which I've never encountered in the other miso soups i had on the trip.
From my trip to Japan for 11 days, I would rank this place as one of my top 2 favorites surprisingly. The other place I liked was a fish place which I'll share in another review. If you are in this airport, I would HIGHLY recommend you check it out. I was surprised to see other reviews that were older that stated similar experiences.
And a fun tip! "itadakimasu" before you eat! In a literal sense, it means, "I humbly receive" before eating the meal.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - 725711941Apr 5, 2019
5 stars for quick service, and the best Tonkatsu at this airport!
All the katsu we ordered were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Excellent!
Ordered the RIB ROAST CUTLET which is the specialty here. If it's available, order it quick before someone else does or you will get nada/zero/ regrets. Got lucky and had the last one! 10 served per day.
The lesser grade pork cutlet was very good too but there was a juicy difference. I preferred the Rib but the Tonkatsu was still cooked right.
Ordered a side order of Shrimp tempura (katsu breading). Huge and perfectly cooked, not dried. Order it. No regrets.
The meals came with a clam miso soup. Be careful as the clams are very small. I suggest you fish these out first before picking up the cup. See my pics. I actually enjoyed those little clams and the miso soup.
Chawanmushi or EGG CUSTARD is delightful and one of the best ones I've had. I liked the shrimp on the bottom. If you like chawanmushi, you will like this one. It's Not salty, has just enough liquid on the bottom, and it was smooth.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 10, 2017
Located on the 4th floor of Haneda International Terminal outside the security area, they offer very good tonkatsu.
Came here for a quick lunch before my flight home and I enjoyed very good tonkatsu lunch. They were busy when I arrived. They took my order while waiting outside to minimize the wait.
Tonkatsu lunch is served with white steamed rice, red miso with clams and pickles. They said feel free to ask for second bowl of rice should I want one.
Tonkatsu was deep fried perfectly, crunchy on outside and juicy on inside.
Service was standard Japanese (in a good way). They accept credit card. Good place to come for the last minute Japanese food before a flight home.Helpful 16Thanks 0Love this 15Oh no 0 - Lis K.Yorba Linda, CA3115196721Apr 20, 2019
A friend told me to try and track this down bc it was the best Katsu. This friend has a long memory and reputation for knowing good eats, so I gave it a good effort and landed here.
Pork Katsu- cut into 8 large bite sized pieces, flakiest crumb coating, not too oily, presented on a wire screen. Simplicity and finesse. I used the spicy mustard, a great compliment to the meat, and poured tonkatsu sauce one at a time so as not to make the others soggy.
I used the table condiments: pitcher of creamy sesame salad dressing, tiny pot of Japanese spicy mustard, and pot with ladle for Tonkatsu sauce.
Cabbage frisée, crisp and light and delicious with salad dressing, offsets tonkatsu very well. More cabbage, green tea and rice/gohan is available upon request.
Red clam miso soup, tiny clams in my bowl! If you care to put in the effort to extract the meat you can. Miso soup was fragrant and soothing after a day of travel.
Bowl of rice and Tsukemono to eat with the katsu.
Very good meal, so glad I tracked this restaurant down!!
How many pictures of katsu does the yelp listing need? I added photos in hopes of providing a few additional and different details.
Hot green tea provided.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nov 16, 2014
Located on the mezzanine level of the Haneda International Airport departure's level behind the gift shops on restaurant row. We were looking for Tonki (Katsu restaurant) by the Meguro stop of the subway in town but never found it. On our trip to Tokyo we had everything from ramen to udon to tempura to Wagyu but missed out on the Katsu until the night we were going to depart Japan for LA.
The display looked good the set up looked even better! The cook made your Katsu pork right in front of you with real bread shavings for the batter (make sure they seat you at the bar). Refer to my pictures. The pork was fresh, they cabbage was thinly sliced and the salad dressing was delicious! Couple all that with the yummy Katsu sauce and clam miso soup. It was a perfect dinner before a 9 hour flight back home. The cabbage and rice were also AYCE. Service was great as the servers were very attentive.
With any airport restaurant, the prices are expensive but the food and service was perfect!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Ema S.New Rochelle, NY0115329Feb 25, 2018
Had the last meal in Japan before flying out. Tonkatsu was fried In front of us and light, crispy outside and juicy inside. They have kid set for 800 yen, which comes with toys, two pieces of tonkatsu and one fried shrimp, rice and furikake (dried seaweed and Japanese soup and egg to sprinkle on top of the rice), miso soup and a cup of orange juice. I recommend to take out sandwich with tonkatsu for plane ride, tastes way better than airplane food.
Most of tonkatsu set is around 2000yen and above. They have small dishes which are not fried, such as tsukune (grilled chicken meatball on skewers), simmered daikon and pork, etc.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Chloe C.San Jose, CA1323219Dec 12, 2014
Both Narita and Haneda airports have good restaurants, but Katsusen is our latest favorite. We will always go to Katsusen every time we fly back from Haneda, that's for sure!
We sat at a counter in front of the Samurai-looking chef. We enjoyed watching him fry our Tonkatsu with a short deft movement. It was beautiful....Their Tonkatsu is thick and juicy. Paper-thin cabbage adds great harmony to the dish.
This is our Tonkatsu heaven. We'll keep coming back!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ant L.Burnaby, Canada3145699Oct 18, 2014First to Review
My first time taking a flight from Haneda airport and find it a very nice user-friendly airport. Most restaurants are located on the top floor, including this Katsusen. The limited menu indicates a higher price than similar restaurants outside of airport (to be understood). The food quality was ok, pork tenderloin a bit more fatty than preferred. And they only have 1 choice of salad dressing for the shredded cabbage.
