Scale Model of Jussieu Library 1992, OMA

I have chosen OMA as my architect and inspiration and the technique of slabs and columns and spatial loops. Using different techniques, OMA creates his designs, instead of stacking levels on each other symmetrically, floors are connected to each other to link an access way to access different levels.

Fig.1 Final Model

I have shown similarities in my model and that of OMA’s through a single trajectory by using ramps to connect different floors together.

The interior of OMA’s model illustrate an ideal version of the world in the way different activities are incorporated in it, for example; cafes, shopping centers, parks etc in the spatial loops. I have shown similarities with three opened loops i incorporated. I tried to replicate the UTS Tower Building as it best depicts similarities of OMA’S works, thus making me focused more on exploring OMA’S technique of columns and slabs. On the second, third and fifth floor levels, I replicated OMA’s techniques of columns and slabs to separate a passage. It is illustrated in the figure below.

Fig.2 Developing my final model

In my first Iteration, I intended to replicate and produce certain parts of OMA’S model, thus making me initially use toothpicks and papers for the first 10 Iterations. The toothpicks, acting as columns were clearly not very efficient in strength, therefore it would make make my project look like it is about to collapse, however when glued onto a material, it was able to withstand on its own. The paper as well will float around and not allowing the sharp side of the toothpick not pierced into it made it even worse for the Iteration to stand on its own. Few of these Iterations are shown below

Acknowledging that my model is not able to withstand on its own unless PVA glue is attached to it, I considered other alternative in which will strengthen the base and also the core. I came up with using tiny bamboo sticks to form the four columns of my project and also using different types of papers in order to cause stability. This idea worked quite well and I incorporated this act in my final model. Throughout my use of different materials in my Iteration, it sometimes change the way the type of building is perceived thus creating a different organisational and social meaning. After completing my final iteration, I decided to imitate the final iteration, however refining certain parts like the edges, the detailing part of the model.
