Question / Help Doubt over OBS Studio FPS settings

I am very confused. I have Logitech C920 Pro. Its spec says that it can record at 1080p/30 FPS maximum. The only Logitech camera which can record 1t 1080p/60FPS is Logitect Brio 4K cam which is four times costlier than mine. How come I am able to set 60 FPS in video output with Logitech C920 Pro when using OBS Studio. The logitect software, Youcam and Windows 10 Camera software all show 30 fps maximum . The spec of the camera says it can record at 30 fps max. What is going on? IS OBS Studio increasing/extrapolating FPS from 30 to 60 fps because it first puts the source on base canvas of 1080p 60 Hz of the laptop display and treats that as input and NOT the original output of device which is 1080p/30FPS only.

Similarly I do local recordings of my HDTV Tatasky set-top box via HDMI cable and Avermedia 710 capture card. The set-top box signal is 1080i/60 which means 1080i and 60 fields per second(not 60 FPS). It can only be converted to 1080p/30 FPS max. But OBS studio gives me an output of 1080p/60 FPS !! this might be because of its multi source mode where it converts it on its base canvas to 1080p 60 FPS. . How to get 1080p/30 FPS directly from the device(single source mode) without putting it on canvas base ?

So you want only to record your webcam in 1080/30pfs?

just make a new scene collection and profile for that.
set video to 30fps and start two instances of OBS - one with your gaming profile, one with your webcam profile.

if you use the same hotkey for start/stop it's even sync.
 
You did NOT get my point. You cannot get something out of nothing. The point is how come I am able to set and as well as get 60 fps for output from a webcam which as per manufacturer( Logitech c920 Pro) cannot give an output greater than 1080p/30FPS. that means there should be a setting that takes the actual camera source as input and not the base canvas(laptop screen ) which converts any video to 1080p 60 fps for its display. Can you take the trouble for me to show how to set this as setting so as to set video capture device as input (true input for faithful output). A humble request. Or shall i post a detailed listing of settings i am doing ?
 
i want to use OBS as DVR just for local max quality recording with single source in video capture mode of OBS.

Okay first im german so my englisg is not perfect :)

you cannot record your webcam directly. you always have to put it on a scene.

a scene will be rendered. you can set the render (fps) settings independently from the inputs.
so if you have a 30 fps webcam and put it on a 60fps scene it will output 60fps by juste double the webcam images.

obs is made for streaming. that means you have multiple sources (game captur, facecam, images, text) on a scene and this scene will be rendered as a video using the settings you set in "video" and "output"

so if you set yout webcam to "highest fps" it will use the highest fps the device is able to use.
 
@Schauerland, thanks for your help. The world has utmost respect for Germans for their innovative technical skills. You have hit the right nail as I was suggesting before: "you cannot record your webcam directly. you always have to put it on a scene" that is the reason why I am not able to get actual raw input from any device: Avermedia CV710 capture card or Logitech webcam because they are first put on a scene to take care of multiple sources. Seems that i will have to get back to ReCentral Software that comes with Avermedia CV710 for set-top box recordings and Logitech and cyberlink youcam for webcam local recordings in actual true settings and NOT re-rendered on my display. Will put a suggestion to make this an option for OBS to record a single device in video capture mode directly without putting it on a scene even though it won't be honored for sure
 
That's the concept of OBS.
If you want to get raw data take a look at VirtualDub.
It also has recording functions and you can use any kind of lossless codec via vfw (utvideo, lagarith, magicyuv etc.)

also remember that your webcam DOES NOT deliver uncompressed images due to limitation of USB.
even if you record uncompress there will be internal compression made by driver.

@Schauerland , please clear one last doubt over this. If i use OBS Studio as DVR for recording set-topbox(Tatasky) which gives a signal of 1080i/60HZ , is 1080p/30FPS the max i can get with denterlacing without any software extrapolation of FPS. Also what does the deinterlacing setting have effect on: Just the preview or the actual processed output for recording. Also what is the effect of scale setting? Is it used for output recordings or just the preview. I use 1920x1080p for base canvas as well as output. Also does the output have to be be scaled by putting in the checkbox on the Rescale Output at the Output Settings Recording Section . I have attached log files. Also not the error in log file where it says "Failed to set profile to high" I use the following settings for local recording :

Im just an odinary user, but i had nearly equal questions.
so i try to answer best i can.

ist alwasy webcam => scene => render => (output/s and preview)

Scaling will only be done if the source (webcam) is not the same size than the scene.
you can chack that if you take a look at the transition of the webcam object (source)

scaling filter is the method how scale is done.
scaling is done by GPU except scaling the whole scene in OUTPUTS (not Video)

scene => (scale "Video" if different to Output) => output => if scale is set scale.

The interlacing is only for DirectShow devices (like webcams capture card etc)
leave it untouched. Mostly necessary if you use capture card with older consoles (NES/SNED)

I think you're confused on how OBS works. The output FPS is not tied to your input FPS at all. You could have an input that is running at 5 fps and another running at 500, but if you set the OBS output to 60fps, the entire output will play back at 60fps (assuming no performance issues during the encoding.).

It's your responsibility as the user to make sure that you're not recording at higher framerate than is needed, not OBS'.

The confusion is regarding what setting should i put in at the video capture configuration settings to capture 1080i 60 HZ signal faithfully . Does this setting take into account the input interlaced video of 1080i ?My video card capability is 1080p 60 FPS(Avermedia 710). Output i have set as 1080p and 30 FPS in video settings. plz note that the input signal is interlaced 1080i 60 Hz which is at best equvalent to 1080p 30 FPS after correct deinterlacing

My input signal is 1080i 60 hz and i want deinterlaced output of 1080p 30 FPS, 60 MBPS. what should be setting at (1) Video capture Device (2) At video settings ? plz note that input is Interlaced at 1080i 60 HZ NOT 1080 P 60 FPS .

Hi Sapiens thanks for reply regarding output settings. The confusion is the setting for input at Video capture device settings. How to take care of interlaced 1080i 60 HZ here? should i put 30 fps or 60 Whar role does setting at this stage of OBS play ?

put it at 60fps there then deinterlace in the right-click menu of the source in the main screen.

I'm having this problem with OBS 20.1.3. My input is 720x480 @ 29.97fps Component video from a Hauppauge Capture card capturing VHS and my output is set to to 720x480 @ 29.97fps. However, the actual file that is output is at 59.94fps. I'm using NVENC.

It was working last night, but then (the only changes I DID!) I decided change the bitrate from CBR@4500 to VBR@7000 and profile from 'main' to 'high'. After that change it's been stuck recording double whatever the 'Common FPS Value' is in Video Settings.

I've tried deleting the profiles and scenes and even the AppData folder to start over from scratch. I also updated my NVidia Driver. But I cannot get it back to recording at 29.97FPS. Also note that for some reason, when it was supposedly capturing at the lower 29.97 framerate, the output files seem to actually be at 30.303fps for some odd reason.

P.S. I cannot use OBS 21.1.2 or any OBS in the 21.x series because they fail to get video from the Hauppauge Capture card. Version 20 is the last version that worked. Furthermore, OBS 21.1.2 also doubles the framerate. I can get video from the capture card in the newer version if I first launch OBS 20.1.3, activate video capture, exit, then launch OBS 21.1.2. The newer version seems to fail telling the card to turn on and start capturing.

Apparently OBS is outputting at 59.97fps if you use any multiple of it. For instance, I figured that since it was doubling the FPS, I could put it at 14.985fps to get 29.97 with numerator and denominator of 2997/200, but it's still 59.94fps.
If I set the Common FPS value to 30, then the output is 60.
If I set the Common FPS value to 24 NTSC, then the output is 47.952fps.

WTF is going on?
