Mushroom Hydnellum peckii. Does anyone accept ice cream?

Hydnellum peckii is an inedible (though nontoxic) fungus and a member of the Hydnellum genus of the Bankeraceae family. It is a hydacid species, producing spores on the surface of vertical spines or dental projections that hang from the lower surface of fruit bodies. It is found in North America, Europe, and was recently discovered in Iran (2008) and Korea (2010). Hydnellum peckii is a mycorrhizal species and forms mutually beneficial relationships with a variety of coniferous trees, growing alone in the soil, scattered or in molten masses.

Fruit bodies usually have a funnel shaped lid with a white border, although the shape can be highly variable. Young and moist fruit bodies can "bleed" a bright red fluid that contains a pigment known to have anticoagulant properties (atromentin), similar to heparin. The unusual appearance of the young fruit bodies has earned the species several common descriptive names, including strawberries and creams, bloody Hydrangea, bleeding tooth fungus, red juice tooth and devil's tooth.
