4 Reasons Why Roaches Might Be a Common Occurrence

Mar 1, 2022

Cockroaches are a pest in virtually every part of the world, but are most common in warm, humid regions like the American South, which includes Arkansas and Oklahoma! They’re virtually everywhere, and universally hated. There almost definitely isn’t a single person who would be pleased to see a cockroach scurrying across their kitchen.

People might assume that the presence of cockroaches indicates a dirty or poorly maintained house, but that isn’t necessarily true. Even people who are meticulously clean are likely to see one at some point in their lives.

Here’s a list of the top reasons why cockroaches might be present in your home or business, despite your best efforts to keep it clean!

1. Accidental entry

If you live in a climate where cockroaches are particularly prevalent, it’s quite possible for cockroaches to enter your home purely accidentally. They might sneak in through a door that gets a lot of traffic, or a door or window that was simply left open.

2. Mind the gap

Over the years, it’s common for doors and windows to expand and contract as the seasons change, which sometimes leaves gaps that serve as invitations for curious insects.

It’s a good idea to take a look around your house every few months, checking for cracks and gaps that are open to the outside– this will help keep bugs out, but can also help your energy bills!

3. Food, water, shelter

One of the main reasons why roaches would enter a building is their search for food, water, and shelter. Even if you keep a clean kitchen, they might still be tempted by pet food bowls left out, crumbs underneath the toaster and refrigerator, or a dripping faucet that provides water for them.

They might also just be seeking shelter from unpleasant weather outside, since they can’t survive very well in excessively hot or cold environments, but making sure to address any cracks they might get through will help.

It’s particularly important to keep food tightly sealed because cockroaches, while not venomous, can easily contaminate food by passing through it.

They frequently carry E. Coli and other bacteria that they won’t hesitate to leave behind in your pantry, which leaves the members of your house susceptible to getting seriously ill.

In order to make sure they aren’t attracted by food scraps at all, make sure to take out the trash every night, store it outside in a tightly sealed container, and wipe down your countertops as frequently as possible.

4. Hitchhiking

A home that has absolutely no crumbs anywhere, is sealed up tight, and is kept immaculately clean can still get cockroaches, unfortunately.

They can often catch a ride into a home by sneaking into packages that have been sitting outdoors, grocery bags, luggage, or plants that are brought inside.

If you see one cockroach, there’s a good chance that you already have an infestation, since they make every effort to stay out of sight.
