The Reasoning
After I watched all of Saiyuki before it was released here in the US, I concluded that Yaone's loyalty to Kougaiji goes far deeper than a simple loyalty. She really does seem to be genuinely in love with him... possibly a result of the kindness he showed her. It even appears to be somewhat shyly reciprocated. Episodes 5, 9, and 18 are good examples of how Kougaiji responds to when she's injured, captured, or otherwise in danger...
