Hi @C3D4D welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum. Please look at [SOLVED] - CSM enable or disable? | Tom's Hardware Forum (tomshardware.com). "UEFI with CSM" usually means mixed mode in which both native Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) and Compatibility Support Module, CSM-based (BIOS) boot is available. The boot menu will show a mix of native UEFI boot entries and CSM "bootable disk" entries in this case. However, one important side effect of disabling CSM is that it'll allow certain UEFI-only features to be activated (such as "fast boot"), at the same time preventing some BIOS-only features (such as PCI option ROM support). You'll need to provide the system model (Alienware M15 R7 for example) for anyone to answer.   In order to have the CSM/legacy option, the system will need to be more than a few years old, as everything newer is UEFI only -- CSM/legacy mode has been gone from new systems for some time.

We need more information -- at least the newer of these models (R10, Released 2021) won't have a CSM/Legacy option.

If your system does have Legacy/CSM mode, you'll see the option in Setup (F2 at powerup).

Not if the system doesn't have that option, no.  New systems that are UEFI-only will only boot from UEFI drives or other media.

Check with the publisher of whatever software/operating system you're trying to use -- they may have a UEFI-compliant distribution.  If they do not, you will need an older system on which to run it.  The very last systems to support a legacy boot were shipped in 2020, so it's been about three years -- and even for a few years before that, systems had started to ship as UEFI-only, particularly pre-built systems (such as Dell/Alienware, HP, Lenovo, etc.) so you may have to go back more than five years to find a system that still had legacy support.

Hi @C3D4D thank you for sharing that you have desktop Alienware Aurora R7. Have asked forum moderator to move this thread to ‎Alienware Desktops | DELL Technologies for free user-to-user Alienware desktop discussion. Hopefully an Alienware Aurora R7 user will say what options are available in the BIOS/UEFI menu. This desktop came with the Windows 10, 64-bit windows operating system which does not have the UEFI with CSM option. But you may have installed a different operating system on an USB stick perhaps. An OS UEFI with CSM option is often referred to as an OS UEFI Class 2. Using EFI/UEFI firmware in a VMware Virtual Machin... - VMware Technology Network VMTN

If the system has a Ryzen CPU, it's not an Aurora R7, which was an Intel system.  The R7 refers to a Ryzen 7.

The R10 in question is too new to have Legacy/CSM support.

The Compatibility Support Module (CSM) is a feature in the BIOS/UEFI that allows legacy BIOS operating systems and boot devices to work with newer UEFI systems. If you need to enable CSM mode for dual-booting Android, here are general steps to access and enable it. Note that the exact steps can vary based on your motherboard and BIOS/UEFI version.

  1. Access BIOS/UEFI:

    • Restart your computer and press the appropriate key to enter the BIOS/UEFI during the boot process. Common keys include Esc, Del, F2, F10, F12, or others depending on your system.
  2. Navigate to Boot Settings:

    • Once in the BIOS/UEFI, navigate to the "Boot" or "Boot Settings" section. This might be under a different name depending on your motherboard manufacturer.
  3. Locate CSM or Legacy Boot:

    • Look for an option related to CSM or Legacy Boot. It might be named differently, such as "Compatibility Support Module," "Legacy Boot Mode," or similar.
  4. Enable CSM:

    • Change the setting to "Enabled" or "Enabled with UEFI only" depending on the available options. Enabling CSM allows the system to boot in both legacy BIOS and UEFI modes.
  5. Save Changes:

    • After making changes, navigate to the "Save & Exit" or a similar option.
    • Confirm that you want to save the changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI.
  6. Boot from Installation Media:

    • Ensure that your Android installation media (USB or DVD) is inserted.
    • Restart your computer and boot from the Android installation media.
  7. Install Android:

    • Follow the on-screen instructions to install Android, and choose the appropriate partition for the installation.

f you encounter any issues or if the steps are different based on your system, refer to your motherboard's manual or documentation for specific instructions. Additionally, consult the Android-x86 project or your Android distribution's documentation for any specific requirements related to your hardware.
