Hirohiko Araki ( 荒木飛呂彦) is a Japanese manga artist. He left school before graduation from Miyagi University of Education.
He enjoys the baseball manga Kyojin No Hoshii (Star of the Giants); the video games Mario Kart and Bomberman; and likes Prince and other African-American singers, as well as jazz, rock, and rap.
I really want to talk to someone about how much of a mess this was. Probably because my priority was storytelling instead of convoluted and poorly representated geometric concepts. There's always the humor, though. And the memes. My tombstone will say: I did it for the memes.
It's sad that it was a mess because a lot of the characters were really fun really interesting: Diego, Blackmore, Hotpants, Ringo, Sandman, etc. Most of those characters were severely underutilized.
Lucy Steel is a great character and, in many ways, is the deuteragonist alongside Gyro.
Honestly think the president is the most boring JoJo villain yet. And the total switcheroo of Stephen Steel's entire character arc gave me narrative whiplash for sure.
Supposedly part of the reason why it took such a severe turn might be because of the switch from Shonen Jump to Shonen Ultra Jump, a switch that was probably overdue because JoJo is unquestionably Seinen. Also, apparently Araki preferred the longer chapter format.
I just can't really accept the sheer number of abandoned plotlines here, no matter how much I love JoJo. Part 6 was super convoluted, but I was always sure what the protagonists were aiming for, even with all the flashbacks. Part 7 was aimless like Part 3 but without the fundamental commitment to comedy. I thought we were to a point where we were focusing on cool stands, but I'm always disappointed when the stands fail to actually make any sense or are too OP to be interesting.
This made me laugh: "The concept of having the United States president fighting the main characters came from when Araki saw the film Independence Day, and liked the idea of a president who fights."
Steel Ball Run is about a race that takes place in the late 1800’s. During the times when cowboys were a thing. The main characters meet during a race across America for prize and fame. But they find out the President of the United States is using them all as Guinea pigs. Somewhere across America are cursed lands that give certain people special powers and abilities. And the President is looking for a particular collection of abilities to absorb and call his own. It is amazing and my current favorite thing. Also one of the main character’s is named Jonathan and he is a badass paraplegic who has awesome powers and a interesting backstory. I was always cheering for him, because he is believably flawed and progresses naturally throughout the story. One of my biggest complaints was the surprise final antagonist of the series. It felt like fan service and almost ruined a perfectly good ending. Overall this was a decent soft reboot of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and I wish most properties would do clever reboots of already established franchises in this manner. (Instead of bastardizing them like Ghostbusters did.)
Oh man where to begin? I think I had a very common journey getting into/experiencing this series as many people. It was for the memes I started watching the anime and along with the encouragements of my younger brother I kept going. I enjoyed it.. till I hit part 4.
It's something that I don't have right words to describe but I was hooked. I binged both part 4 and 5 in succession. It was not only something I have never seen before but also something very well executed.
After watching the part 6 of the anime(Obligatory Fuck You to Netflix) and thoroughly enjoying every second of it, I turned my eyes to this Behemoth of a story - Steel Ball Run, Part 7.
I call this Behemoth not because of its size story but the size of the fandom that truly loves it and puts it on a pedestal that I have rarely seen a fandom do.
And safe to say, I was not disappointed. What a story! What a journey! The story had such a classic feel to it yet it looked and felt modern. And the characters! Whatever these characters lacked in depth, they made it up with their sheer fucking personality (which is actually quite common in JoJo). It was a journey that felt motivational, that in the end of it all my first review was - It was a story worth telling.
The references to previous parts, the amazing yet (dare I say) more bizzare fights than ever with the amazing brotherhood between Jonny and Gyro and add in the amazingly charismatic antagonists just truly makes this an obvious contender for the best JoJo part.. ever.
I like this series because of the different obstacles that Johnathan Joestar and Gyro Zepelli have to overcome. The idea of the steal ball run race real purpose was to collect the corpse parts. I like that Johnathan Joestar and Gyro Zepelli have many different enemies wanting to collect the corpse parts. Gyro Zepelli wants to win the race because he wants to free a boy from his home country that was sentenced to death. And Johnathan Joestar joined the race because he wanted to learn the secret of Gyro Zepellis "spin" so he could make his legs move again.
I already logged the last sbr volume but i just want to log this as well since it’s basically the whole series and has all the pages. This is 100% gonna be the longest “book” i read so i might delete it lol . But ya this was perfect. All the characters were so amazing and literally everything was perfect. The pacing was rlly nice too so i wasnt bored at all reading this. DIEGO I LOve u.
Personally, I find this to be one of the best parts in the JoJo franchise. The relationship between Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli is very strong and the antagonist continues the trend of being dangerous, calculated, and unique. Most of the fights are pretty well done but some do feel a bit pointless. I recommend reading this while eating pizza mozzarella.
Voy a contar también a los monos chinos como lecturas, y más porque la historia va de dos cowboys hermosos que viajan por todo Estados Unidos para recuperar las partes del cuerpo de Jesucristo redentor 🥹
Crazy action and insane plot twists during a cross continental horse race made this a super exciting read. Probably tied with part 3 for my favorite jojo story. Araki is very creative.
One of my favourite Jojo parts as it presents the evolution in Araki’s artstyle and presents one of the best villains after Kira, the one and only Funny Valetine. It is truly a work of art
3.5/5 plot is derivative as fuck. doesn't get good until 40/50ish chapters in (out of 96!). overrated honestly. some beautiful and creative illustrations tho
