Microsoft announces availability of the Pocket PC 2002

Johannesburg, 01 Oct 2001

Microsoft Corp has announced the availability of the software that will power the next generation of the mobile PDA - the Pocket PC 2002. Code-named `Merlin`, the device will deliver a modern interface, new features to benefit business users and companies, as well as more ways of communicating with friends and colleagues. The software is more powerful, stylish and customisable to users` individual needs.

Pocket PC 2002 has the ability to easily download, create and share personalised `Today Screens` called `themes`. Update features include Windows Media Player with support for the latest Windows Video and Audio 8 technology including streaming, and improved electronic reading possibilities through Microsoft Reader.

"The next-generation PDA will also offer enterprise users a secure, reliable and robust mobile solution," says David Setshedi, director .NET and developer group at Microsoft South Africa. "For example, the Terminal Services application enables users to access their operating system server through their device."

The new software is ready for a range of wireless connectivity options such as local area networks, personal area networks and wide area networks, keeping users connected like never before, and enabling them to access and store information on the device while still on the go. Pocket PC 2002 also supports MSN Messenger and includes enhanced remote synchronisation capabilities.

Microsoft and its partners will formally launch the Pocket PC 2002 on 4 October 2001 at events in San Francisco and London, and will make the product available in retail stores in the US and Europe. Delivery is expected in the South African market during the first quarter of 2002.

"The release of the first Pocket PC demonstrated that there is a real demand for a functional mobile device," says Setshedi. "Microsoft is continuing to raise the technology bar in the mobile arena."
