Red-Lipped Batfish

Ogcocephalus darwini

The red-lipped batfish or Galapagos batfish is a fish of unusual morphology found around the Galapagos Islands and off Peru at depths of 3 to 76 m . Red-lipped batfish are closely related to rosy-lipped batfish , which are found near Cocos Island off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. This fish is mainly known for its bright red lips. Batfish are not good swimmers; they use their highly adapted pectoral fins to "walk" on the ocean floor. When the batfish reaches maturity, its dorsal fin becomes a single spine-like projection . Like other anglerfish, the red-lipped batfish has a structure on its head known as illicium. This structure is employed for attracting prey.
Red-lipped batfish Galapagos, Ecuador (2005).This is a very funny looking fish. It reptates by the sandy bottom and is endemic of Galapagos Islands. it can be seen after a certain depth. It has fins that look like arms, thick red colored lips, and the pattern as shown in the pictures. Is a nice sighting when scuba diving in the Galapagos. I saw this one while diving around Isla Genovesa.

Habitat

Red-lipped batfish can be found at depths of 3 to 76 m , in the Pacific Ocean around the Galapagos Islands and off Peru. It has been noted before that a few specimens of red-lipped batfish were found in fish nets in California, but all these type of sightings are extremely rare, and could very well be another type of batfish. They are bottom dwellers, so they are usually found within the sand or ocean floor. Although they are considered shallow water forms, they occasionally come to the surface over deep water. They tend to associate themselves with the edges of reefs up to about 120 m deep.

Reproduction

Sexually reproduce. Egg Type: Pelagic, Pelagic larva.

Food

The species is a piscivore / invertivore, mainly feeding on other small fish and small crustaceans like shrimps and mollusks.
