Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Entrepreneurship and Technology Centers, in collaboration with Sopu Academy and the Embassy of Finland in Ankara, organized a 12-hour Negotiation Pioneers Leadership Program for Educators and Youth on 15-16 July 2023. I had the privilege of participating in this enriching program, in which I learned about the concept of "sopu," a Finnish term that emphasizes the value of finding common ground and mutually beneficial solutions in negotiations. I believe understanding sopu will be a crucial aspect of my personal and professional development, as it showed me the power of collaboration and how it can lead to win-win outcomes. The program was structured around various negotiation simulations, which provided an excellent opportunity to put the acquired knowledge into practice. Engaging in these simulations allowed me to improve my negotiation and empathy skills, build my confidence, and develop a deeper understanding of the dynamics involved in reaching agreements. Caveat for educators : Adopting a theoretical insight to teaching and learning and observing the way students learn over the years has taught me that there is no one way to teach others. Probably no one way to do anything really. Teaching is situational so we’re required to bring the necessary tools and attitudes based on the situation. That’s the start of your A game right there. For example, based on the willingness and capabilities of your audience (as we saw with the Hersey and Blanchard Leadership Model) or based on the cultural dynamics and the demographic group that’s receiving the message. Seems like a lot right ? Nope.
