RHEL 4.8 P2V Kernel Panic

Hi All -

I have been troubleshooting this issue relentlessly. First of let me start by stating that I have successfully performed other P2Vs using the VMware converter 5.x and re-compiled the boot kernel with LSI logic drivers. Typically the boot will fail with something ..."Volume group <VOL> not found"...

Well in this case, the failed boot does not mention anything about volume groups not found.

Quote:
mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2
I am able to boot into a rescue disk and chroot into the file system, I have done everything from the below posted articles.

I need some help!!

you are aware that 4.8 is unsupported and that 4.9 is on EXTRA life support and that too will go "end of life" in February

you might want to contact redhat tech support
you ARE paying for the redhat license ( maybe ?? seeing as 4.8 is not supported any longer by redhat )

John -

Thank you for jumping in here. I do realize this is out of support and quite honestly do not expect much help from RedHat at this point, was hoping someone out there has ran into this problem and just never felt the urge to share their success.

Everything I can find out there points to the scsi drivers not being loaded into the kernel and I have moved past that part. Grub has been re-installed, loads fine and provides me with the correct entries listed in menu.lst/grub.conf.

For anyone curious, the partition layout is as follows:

No RAID involved here
/dev/sda1 -> Boot
/dev/sdb1 -> LVM > VolGroup00 > LogVol0{0,1} (LogVol00 is swap, LogVol01 is root)

Some additional details...
After the P2v the OS will not load and display "Error booting no operating system" or something along this lines and this is expected until grub is re-installed.
after updating grub, I am now running into the problem in the first post of this thread.
