What Is a Burn-Up Chart Template?
A burn-up chart template provides a framework to report the amount of work completed on a project. Use the template to monitor the progress of your sprint or release’s story points and show stakeholders how much project work is done.
Whereas a burndown chart displays how much project work remains, a burn-up chart indicates how much work has been completed for a project, release, or sprint. See our comprehensive article on burndown charts for useful resources.
Project burn-up templates help Scrum masters and other Agile team members track team progress. They can also use the template to detect trends in their release iterations, which will help them accurately forecast future sprint efforts.
A successful burn-up chart template helps ensure that you capture all measurable project details, including iteration, sprint or release, feature or story points, and the total number of points and tasks completed. This data is represented in a graphical burn-up chart, which helps with story-pointing — or weighting — features for future iterations.
Though burn-up chart templates vary, they typically include the following components:
- Iteration: Enter the name or number of the sprint or release.
- Story Points Completed: For each project feature, task, or subtask, enter the number of story points completed.
- Total Points Completed: For each iteration, sprint, or release, enter the total number of story points completed.
- Average Points Previously Completed: Enter the average number of story points completed from any number of previous sprints. Use this data to see how the number of story points completed for your current sprint compares to your points-completion average.
Additionally, some more-detailed burn-up chart templates include the following sections:
- Feature Name: Enter the name of each feature for the iteration, sprint, or release.
- Backlog Task and ID: Provide the name of each task to be completed in the sprint, along with its unique ID.
- Feature Story Points: Set the number of points for each feature to be completed within the iteration.
- Task Story Points: List each task’s number of points required for completion.
- Assigned To: Enter the name of the team member responsible for completing the feature or task.
- Status: Provide the status for each feature or task (e.g., Not Started, On Hold, Overdue, In Progress, Complete).
- Original Estimate: Enter the original estimated number of points to complete the feature or task.
- Actual Points: Enter the number of actual points it took to complete the feature or task.
