Supermodel Joan Smalls reveals her beauty secrets

She first walked for Givenchy in 2010, and ever since Porto-Rican Joan Smalls has made a name for herself as a supermodel, lighting up the Victoria’s Secret catwalk, lending her face to Estée Lauder campaigns and inspiring a capsule collection for the W Hotel in Paris. Vogue Paris meets the model, who reveals the contents of her beauty closet, her top beauty tips and her mantras for a happy, successful life.

The first thought when you wake up in the morning?

I want a few more minutes of sleep! I don't want to get up! But seriously, I’m also thankful for another day.

Last thought before going to sleep?

I pray every evening and then I say goodbye to my boyfriend and tell him I love him. It's always in that order, like when I was a child: "goodnight, good dreams, I love you".

How would you describe your style in three words?

Urban, feminine and tomboy. My style has to adapt to my life as a model, where I spend most of my time in hotels. So I like to combine travel and fashion with a comfy and trendy style with plenty of accessories.

What is your favorite piece out of the collection?

I like a classic leather jacket, and I love jewelry which I always layer up.

What's the beauty look that suits you the best?

The cat eye! It’s a look that suits everyone, and you can change it up depending on your taste: you can extend it, do a half-cat eye etc. I use the Estée Lauder pen which has a thin, pointy end as well as a chunkier, thick end. It’s so easy to use!

A go to beauty look for a night out ?

A red lip: it's such a statement that I keep the rest of my face natural and glowy. I think a red lip is so powerful and can give you an instant confidence boost.

What does your daily beauty routine look like?

I start my day with a glass of warm water and lemon because it's so good for your digestion, your skin, and even for your metabolism. I also use coconut oil to remove makeup and I also put it on my eyelashes and the tips of my hair to promote growth.

A tip for perfect and healthy hair?

I do a lot of masks at the weekends. I go to the gym a lot so before I go I apply a deep conditioner and use coconut oil and organic oil as DIY masks. I then put my hair in a bun, go to the gym and workout. The heat from the workout allows the nutrients to seep into your skin. I usually wait an hour before washing everything out.

What's the beauty trend that you like the most at the moment ?

Everything glittery! Especially sparkly eyelids, but also bright eyes and shimmery make up.

The craziest makeup you have ever worn?

The bleached eyebrows for Givenchy. The result was so powerful and artistic. All the models looked the same which gave the look a surreal, intense finish.

The ultimate piece of beauty advice?

To love yourself, love how you look and work with what you have. We don’t all have to look the same, and I love it when people create their own identity. I follow @uglyworldwide on Instagram, which is run by a girl who shaved her eyebrows and creates crazy make up looks. She has her own smile and a big smile (which is often accessorized!). I wouldn’t wear everything she does but I admire that she is 100% herself. I think that's what beauty really is.

The best piece of advice you were ever given?

To be present in the moment. When you’re in front of a photographer, for example, you have to focus on the shoot and block out any noise around you.

A trick to surround yourself with good vibes and positive energy ?

Be around people who love to be positive, who like to do better in life and are happy when others are happy. Surround yourself with people who are smarter and funnier than you.

The most treasured possession in your vanity?

I'm not really into material possessions, but I would say a picture of my mum taken in Elizabeth Park. In the picture, everyone around is smiling but I look really mad! Seeing this picture never fails to make me smile.

Do you follow a particular diet?

No, I wish! I don’t follow a particular diet but try to eat healthily. That said, I can’t say now to rice, beeg and meat… I just workout a lot to compensate!

How many hours per day or week do you work out?

If I can, I work out every day or 5 times a week for around 1 hour.

What's your ideal breakfast?

French toast, crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, and white yoghurt with cheese and orange juice

A cheat meal?

I love pasta so much! I won't deprive myself. Life is too short for a diet.

What advice to boost your self confidence? Your life motto?

Keep it moving !
