This hatchet works very well especially for the money. The handle fits well in one hand but when I needed to use 2 there was enough room to comfortably do that. The blade is attached in such a way that it was very stable. The cover over the blade point is a nice safety feature. Nice little tool for my kindling.

Oh. My. Lord. Totally took me by surprise. I don't usually associate Ozark Trail with "quality." Just cheap crap for the one-one family camping trip, right?

This was the cheapest that I bought with five other axes for comparison to prove you don't need to spend a lot of money on your hand ax. But I certainly did NOT expect it to be such a great value. 

That said, be prepared to put some work into it to bring out its best qualities. 

Dull. 
Any ax you can buy off the shelf SHOULD be dull! Can you imagine the liability of having razor sharp axes where just anyone can play with them? That, and "ax folk" all have their own preferemce for the edge they want on them (Skandi/flat grind, compound bevel, convex bit...). 

I used an aggressive double-cut file to bring the blade bevel from nearly 30 deg. down to 20 deg. Then I used a standard 10-in  Nicholson b*stard mill to smooth out the file marks. Then I convexed the bit out to 1500 grit sandpaper before giving it a good stropping. NOTE: I left plenty of material to shore up the edge. I restore axes as a hobby. I prefer 22-23 deg. for full axes and 18-20 for carving/hand axes. But the bit itself? -- that might be a secondary bevel at between 30 and 40 deg.

Good weight.
One and a quarter pounds is a general rule of thumb for a small hand ax. And this says 1.25 lb. on the head. 

Good pattern.
This is a typical American pattern head for a general purpose camp ax. 

Quality steel.
Surprised at how hard it was to file. File sure wanted to skate. But this is good. It's a sign of a good high carbon, tempered steel and promised the edge I choose for it will hold up,

A lot of work involved setting it up (see photos) -- but that's only a con for people who don't like to work on axes, 

Resin-bonded haft. (I want to hang the head lower about an inch or so, sit it down closer to the shoulder -- but it's very difficult to remove and clean up a resin-bonded head, I may just leave it.

Surprisingly good ax, tremendous value

I knew I liked this as soon as I opened it. It has good weight to it that carries through when you chop with it. My thick and dried out palm fronds were chopped off easily. The handle length is just right and holds a good grip. I have a long axe, but I'm can tell this will be my preferred tool between the two.

This makes me feel empowered! I can really do a number on our unruly oak trees with this! It's a lot heavier than I expected, so even though I'm not super strong it uses that heft to make the chopping easier. My daughter wanted to get the chance to use it so it made her want to do chores: a big win!!!

I received the Ozark Trail Wooden Handle Hatchet. This is a nice size and weight for camping, cutting up kindling, or ax throwing. The blade may not be as sharp as some like it. But, that is easily fixed. The handle has "American Hickory" etched into it. The length of the handle is 12 and 1/4 inches long. It also has an ergonomic shape to it, not just straight. The blade has the brand and "1 1/4 lb" stamped on it. From the back of the blade to the cutting tip is 5 inches long.

Overall I was pretty happy with this axe at the price. It could definitely use a sharpening out of the box so maybe not ideal for someone who doesn't have the tools to do so. However, it will still get the job done and good for light work. Felt decent to hold and comfortable. Solid option for someone who is needing a hatchet for the occasional use.

I used this thing to split a couple of logs, seems to work fine. The blade isn't super sharp, but a sharp blade wouldn't last when pounding wood anyway. The handle has a good feel and the blade seems to be secure. Can be used to remove small thin trees and shrubs in addition to splitting wood so this can be a pretty useful tool.
