Dirty John has found a new tainted love to embrace — and a new set of stars to bring it to life.
TVLine has learned that TV vets Amanda Peet (Brockmire) and Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) have been tapped to headline Season 2 of the USA Network-bound anthology thriller, succeeding Season 1 leads Connie Britton and Eric Bana. Additionally, we can confirm that the new season will be based on the sordid real-life tale involving suburban housewife Betty Broderick, who in 1989 was convicted of killing her ex-husband and his second wife.
Bearing the new title Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story, Season 2 will unpack Broderick’s “epic true tale of love gone wrong — a story that spans the 1960s to the ’80s, through the breakdown of a marriage that Oprah deemed one of ‘America’s messiest divorces’ even before it ended in double homicide,” per the official logline.
Peet will portray Broderick, described as the “perfect Southern California blonde wife and mother.” Slater, meanwhile, will play her immensely charming — and ill-fated — husband Daniel. The gig keeps Slater in the USA Network fold following his four-season run on Mr. Robot, which kicks off its final season on Oct. 6.
Back in May, shortly after Dirty John was renewed for a second season, it was announced that the series would shift from Bravo (its Season 1 home) to sister NBC Universal cabler USA Network. Dirty John was a breakout hit for Bravo, finishing its rookie run as one of last year’s top 10 cable scripted shows in the 18-49 demo.
This story is well told. Plus Dirty John should be a man, not a murderous scorned woman.
Dirty John was fantastic, so I’ll definitely give this a go. But what is the point of putting it under a Dirty John moniker? Just create another successful one off limited series.
Well, they couldn’t call it A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick Story, because that’s already been done. Meredith Baxter. 1992. Not sure why they didn’t choose something that hasn’t been done. There’s plenty of true crime out there to go around.
Thanks, Mol — I remembered the Meredith Baxter version, but drew a blank on the name and date! You’ve save my sanity — for now … ;-)
Does Connie Britton ever stay anywhere??
Yes, In the closet. Meow.
The show is an anthology, why would she stay?
It’s kind of weird that they’re still calling the show “Dirty John”, since that’s a specific reference to the man, Eric Bana was playing in season one.
Why not just Dirty Betty? Dirty John was based on a real person (John Meehan) a con artist. Betty Boderick has her own real-life murder story and Dirty John wasn’t involved. 😂
Noe I can start watching the show since Britton is gone. I only watch 911 after she left the series. Good show..I simply refuse to watch anything she is part of the cast in, but fear not, she doesn’t stay around for long anywhere.

OMG!!!!! Please renew!!!! Great season finale!!!! Need season 2!!! Great cliffhanger!!! Need to know who shot Santiago! Just like on Dallas….we needed to know who shot JR! Please bring it back! Was in suspense from start to end! Don’t leave us without season 2 PLEASE!!!
What are you talking about?
I liked Season 1 of Dirty John even though I didn’t think the Connie Britton character was too bright. But they should not do this Betty Broderick story. It was done to perfection by Meredith Baxter. And I agree with others, the name Dirty John doesn’t fit with Betty’s story.
I agree with the comments regarding the strange choice of name — “Dirty John” was a specific title about a specific person. If this is about Betty Broderick, then the name should reflect that. It’s a pretty weak marketing strategy & will lead to unrealistic expectations. Would’ve made more sense to do a “one-off”, and reference “Dirty John” with something along the lines of “… from the people who brought you ‘Dirty John’ ….” And re Connie Britton, I (selfishly, as I like her) wish should would put down roots, but if she’s being offered varied acting choices, more power to her — I wish her well!
I must say this season of dirty John is epic😱 I am loving it and the acting is Superb
Awesome cast.
