Former MLB pitcher Sergio Mitre appeared at a northeast Mexico court and was formally accused of killing and raping his girlfriend's two-year-old daughter.
Prosecutors in Saltillo, Coahuila, charged Mitre three days after he had been arrested by the Coahuila Criminal Investigation Agency for possessing two small bags of marijuana.
During Wednesday court appearance, the prosecutor's office said Ines bled to death due to injuries suffered in her abdomen and back. The child suffered internal bleeding in her esophagus due to the rupture of an artery.
Investigators are also looking into whether the mother, 19-year-old Liliana Ines, was involved in her daughter's death.
A spokesperson for the prosecutor's office told DailyMail.com that Mitre is due back in court Monday, July 20.

According to the prosecutor's office, Ines was with Mitre and her mother when she was beaten and sexually assaulted between midnight and 1pm local time Sunday.
Medical records showed Ines suffered injuries in the mouth, eyes, face, arms, abdomen, legs and feet. Records also indicated that Ines reportedly was sexually assaulted with a foreign object.
On Wednesday, the Mexican Baseball League announced the indefinite suspension of the 39-year-old pitcher. Mitre was also released by his current club, the Saltillo Saraperos.
'Our League strongly rejects and condemns any criminal behavior and especially acts of domestic violence that must be eradicated in our social environment,' Mexican Baseball League said in a statement. 'In our country, physical and verbal violence against women is a subject that requires the greatest of our attention. There will be no tolerance of this type of behavior in the Mexican Baseball League.'

Liliana Ines told authorities that she took her daughter to a local clinic Saturday after Ines was vomiting at her grandmother's home.
A doctor diagnosed the girl with stomach pain and sent her home, which the mother shares with Mitre.
However, Ines complained of abdominal pain and vomited Sunday.
Liliana Ines took her daughter to a Red Cross clinic. Doctors then subsequently rushed the girl to Dr. Federico Gómez Santos Children's Hospital, where she was declared dead.
The Los Angeles native was also arrested in August 2019 on a domestic dispute incident at a hotel in Mexico but charges were later dropped.
Mitre played eight season in the majors with the Chicago Cubs, Florida Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees, for whom he last pitched in 2011.
