The world of motorsport is in mourning after 23-year-old SuperBike star Matheus Barbosa was killed in a horror crash at Interlagos on Sunday. 

The accident, which occurred at the Brazilian circuit famous for Formula One, came when the young driver appeared to lose control of his bike on a corner, leading to him careering off the track and into a metal barrier.

The Kawasaki rider was in fourth position in the race when he lost control of his bike, and it was later confirmed that he died at the scene despite receiving immediate medical attention from the emergency services.

The race was immediately called to a halt in the wake of the accident, with the final 10 laps of the race not finished.

A spokesperson for SuperBike Brasil said: 'The nearest medical team reached Matheus in less than 60 seconds but despite all their efforts he succumbed to his critical injuries.

'The cause of the accident is still being investigated. Out of respect to Matheus, and above all his family, the remaining day's activities were immediately cancelled.'

'The competition was being held with all the necessary security conditions established by the appropriate authorities.

'The organisation's priority at this time is to fully support Matheus' family.'

It is not the first time Interlagos has been the scene of a tragic motorcycle accident, with two riders dying at the track in 2019.

In April last year, SuperBike rider Mauricio Paludete died in a crash, before a month later Danilo Berto also lost his life in an Interlagos accident.
