Takefusa Kubo has not had a single training session with his new team, but that did not stop Jose Bordalas from throwing the youngster on to help his Getafe side earn a 3-1 victory over Elche. Kubo was directly involved in both of Getafe’s winning goals.

Elche midfielder, Ivan Marcone, received a red card in the 54th minute. After 10 minutes, Bordalas threw Kubo on to the pitch to take advantage of his attacking qualities while the match still stood in the balance as a 1-1 draw. Within three minutes of entering the pitch, Kubo received the ball from Alena, where he was just outside the box on the right flank, and took his defender, Josema, on 1 v 1. In doing so, Kubo was able to create enough space for a shot on goal by cutting in on his left. His curling shot could only be parried by Edgar Badia, leaving Jaime Mata an easy tap in on the rebound.

Carles Alena would continue to play provider for Kubo. The Barcelona loanee threaded a ball in between two center backs to feed the Japanese playmaker who had made a run in the left half space. The pass would be received by Kubo, but with two defenders barreling down he only managed to get a toe-poke shot which trickled into Badia’s hands. Kubo was active and involved throughout his 25 minutes, being fouled recklessly by Rigoni which nearly drew another red card for Elche.

His goal creating actions would not end with Jaime Mata. In the 86th minute, Kubo again received the ball out wide and again decided to take on Josema. After creating enough space, Kubo whipped in a left-footed cross which looked destined for connection with Getafe striker, Angel, only for the Spaniard to be tackled down by Verdura. A penalty was awarded and Kubo again was decisive.

Getafe ultimately won the match 3-1 and Kubo was key to his team’s victory. Getafe’s next match is against Huesca on January 20th. Takefusa Kubo will have a week and half to train with his new teammates before stepping on the pitch again.
