Dr. Hebert on coronavirus: Yes, wash your fruits and vegetables with soap
YOU COULD INFECT YOUR WHOLE FAMILY. GINA: YOU MENTIONED FOOD. ANOTHER QUESTION ALONG THOSE LINES, THE SAME VIEWER ASKS HOW DO YOU SANITIZE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES? IS THAT SOMETHING WE SHOULD BE DOING? DR. HEBERT: THIS IS A GOOD QUESTION. NO ONE HAS ASKED THIS THAT MUCH. WHEN WE EAT, WE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT PEOPLE ARE ALSO PREPARING OUR FOOD. BEFORE WE EVEN GET TO CLEANING VEGETABLES, I WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING EVERYONE PREPARING YOUR FOOD, WHETHER IT IS TAKE OUT, OR IF IT IS A FAMILY MEMBER, JUST BECAUSE IT IS A FAMILY MEMBER DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE NOT CARRYING THE CORONAVIRUS. THEY STILL HAVE TO WASH THEIR HANDS. SO WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO CLEAN YOUR VEGETABLES? YOU NEED TO DO THE SAME THING YOU’RE ARE DOING TO WASH HER HANDS. THE SOAP DECREASES THE SURFACE TENSION ON THE SURFACE, WHICH IS WHY IT IS SO SLIPPERY. SO I WANT YOU TO USE A SOAP, PUT THAT UNDER THE WATER, THEN RINSE OFF ALL OF YOUR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE WE COULD BE SEEING A LOT OF THE SPREAD. SO WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE TO DO THAT. GINA: DID YOU JUST TELL US TO WASH YOUR FOOD WITH SOAP? YES, YOU DID. DR. HEBERT: WASH YOUR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES WITH A DETERGENT THAT CAN BE USED FOR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THAT, HE STILL HAVE TO USE A DILUTE SOLUTION OF SOME KIND OF SOLUTION TO WASH THEM OFF VER
