Star Wars: Episode IX isn’t going to be the end for Rey, Finn or other characters introduced in The Force Awakens, with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy telling the weekly Star Wars Show web series that plans are already afoot for potential new stories.
“We’re sitting down now, we’re talking about the next 10 years of Star Wars stories, and we’re looking at, narratively, where that might go,” Kennedy said while talking about the work of Lucasfilm’s Story Group. “Future stories beyond Episode IX with these new characters: Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8 — but we’re also looking at working with people who are interested in coming into the Star Wars world and taking us places we haven’t been yet. That’s exciting, too, because it’s a vast galaxy far, far away.”
On the one hand, this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise; characters have moved between trilogies before — part of the appeal of The Force Awakens was seeing Leia, Han and Chewbacca again, after all — and, with the stand-alone Star Wars Story movie framework, any future stories could take place either before or during the current trilogy. Nonetheless, this comes across as surprisingly spoiler-esque, at the very least. It’s also interesting that the exec didn’t mention exploring future stories with Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren.
Perhaps aware of the attention Kennedy’s comments would get, it’s worth noting that makers of the Star Wars Show snuck in a Last Jedi reveal of their own in this week’s episode — the first-ever footage of new location Canto Bight, which can be glimpsed at the 3:13 mark.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens Dec. 15. Presumably, we’ll see more of Canto Bight then.
